This is a poem I came across many years ago. I feel that many of my clients that have experienced trauma or abuse in childhood may relate to this. It shows the impact such abuse can have not only on themselves but how they may relate to others.
I once worked with a young woman that had a very traumatic childhood. She had been sexually abused by her brother and teacher, emotionally abused by her mother and physically abused by her father. When I met her she was a very unhappy person with low self esteem, severe depression and anxiety and at times she was self harming and suicidal.
A grounding technique is simply a type of tool within the cognitive behavioural therapy framework used to help an individual learn to ‘ground’ him or herself and in doing so to be better able to keep themselves in the present.
